Big Screen Sunday

The amazing Miss Rita offered up her babysitting services this afternoon to give Mr. R. and I an afternoon on the town. Have I mentioned how much we LOVE Miss Rita? I joined Ironman for a Panera lunch date, magazine reading at Barnes, and The Avengers. We both loved the Avengers. Lots of blowing stuff up and smashing things for Mr. R. and plenty of screen shots of Ironman and Thor for me. But seriously, the movie is smart and witty. Tony Stark's one liners were awesome and our fellow theater going patrons must have felt the same. They belly laughed with us, gasped with us, and applauded when the good guys won. We have been home a few hours now and Pip is entertaining us with her new dancing skills and ability to empty everything out of a cabinet in less than 10 seconds. I may not be a super hero, but I can take solace in my ability to chase a fast crawling baby, not trip over the million toys she pulls out, and make her laugh while playing peek-a-boo for the bajillionth time today.

Steppin' Out Saturday: Derby Style

Mr. R., Pip, and I were invited to a Cinco de DERBY Party. Fancy hats and mint juleps required for the 1st half and mustaches and sombreros preferred for the second. We stepped out in our finest Derby gear this afternoon and joined good friends for the "Run for the Roses".  Pip was very entertained by all the hats, cheering, and clapping.

This year I actually took my horse picks pretty seriously and read up on my choices. I picked Union Rags and was sure he would be the winner. Luckily Mr. R. and cheap and didn't place any money on my pick. I think my guy came in DEAD last.
This was her face after we told her she didn't win. After the race, our hats and heels came off and corn hole was played and more salsa than I would like to admit was eaten.  We left with a very tired baby, patting ourselves on the back for getting out of the house and making time for friends.

a BETTER story

If you read my post on Thursday you probably know that this past week was just a TAD stressful. Who am I kidding, last week I was a crazed, exhausted, and stressed out mess. I was running on coffee, fumes, and adrenaline. I actually went to work on Wednesday without my work computer and classroom keys. On Thursday I fell asleep during my lunch break.

I know last week is far from the norm in our story, but that fact that it happened was scary enough. I think last week was a bit of a wake-up call for me. I spend a lot of my life making lists, organizing, and planning, but I also over plan, stress-out, and get distracted from the important stuff.

Summer is just around the corner and I think for the next three sunshine filled glorious months our little family will be taking a break from the norm. We are going to build a better story for our family. We are going to spend more quality time together. There will be less list making and more day trips, story reading, napping, swimming, and visiting.

We are canceling cable, buying more books, going to the beach, having picnics, and going to the park.

I am ready for some AWESOME.

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU!

Whether you are a member of the Empire or the Rebellion, may you have a Happy National Star Wars Day!
P.S. This is the ultimatum Mr. R. gave me ten years ago right before we started dating.

Three things and more on Thursday:

Last Thursday my students went on a class trip to Medieval Times. We ate with our hands, saw a jousting match, crowned a princess, and learned how to become a knight. The kids had a great time and were well behaved. What more could a teacher ask for?
Friday: We grilled out at my grandparents and said goodbye to my Uncle Robert who headed back to NJ for the summer. Piper had her first taste of Sunny’s baked beans and LOVED them. Not that I expected anything otherwise, our family has a soft spot for Sunny’s BBQ.
Saturday: Mr. R. and I have been putting off our monthly BIG SHOP and by Saturday our fridge and pantry were almost bare. One cannot live off popcorn and canned black beans alone. As a family we headed to Costco and our poor scion was stuffed to the brim as we made the trek back to St. Augustine. The good news is NO ONE and that means you MR. R. cannot complain there is NOTHING for dinner.
Sunday: Pip woke up late Saturday night with a fever. It broke when we gave her Tylenol, but she was incredibly fussy and uncomfortable all night. We figured it was teething, those darn teeth!, gave her ora-jel and headed back to bed. Mid Sunday we discovered that she had a large pimple on her bottom that was painful to the touch. She continued to run a low grade fever all day. And by Sunday night the pimple had burst and was starting to ooze. We called the after-hours number for her doctor and made an appointment for Monday morning.
Monday: Pip and Mr. R. head to the doctor and I go to work. At 10:30 the school secretary come to my classroom and tells me PIP IS IN THE HOSPITAL!  It turns out the pimple was actually a boil containing a staph infection. It has infiltrated her subcutaneous tissues and was causing her fever. She was started on antibiotics immediately.  The boil was too large to drain all at once so every 6 hours the nurses/doctor would try to extract more of the pus.
Tuesday: 24 hours in the hospital.
GOOD NEWS:  Pip’s fever has broken. And the boil has been reduced to the size of pencil point. She has had lots of visitors from church and the neighborhood. We really have an awesome adopted Florida family.
BAD NEWS: She is refusing to sleep or eat and is very irritable. She is being housed on the newborn floor and loves looking at the new babies in the nursery. We spend a lot of time roaming the halls and hanging out with the nurses.  Also, my grandfather has been admitted to the hospital with a terrible cough and low blood count. Six hours later my grandmother is also admitted to the hospital with a high fever and high white blood cell count.
Wednesday: 48 hours in the hospital.
GOODNEWS: Pip’s white blood count came down and her infection is almost contained. She is no longer contagious and she was RELEASED from the hospital! We can finally get some much needed rest! My grandfather was released from the hospital as well and is hopefully on the mend.
BADNEWS: My grandmother was diagnosed with the flu and is under quarantine. Her fever is down, she is feeling better, but will not be coming home as soon as we had hoped.
Thursday:  We are exhausted, but thankful to be home and getting back to normal. Three cheers that tomorrow is the weekend!

Embrace the Camera & Outlet Shopping

Last night we stepped out to the local outlet mall in search of deals.  Mr. R. heard Banana Republic was having a 70% sale this week and he was itching to use his birthday gift card. Mr. R. and I both came up empty handed, but Miss Pip scored a new pair of shoes!
Being the shoe-hater that she is, a friend suggested we try baby crocs. They are super lightweight and less constricting than actual shoes. So far Pip is a fan. She loves to touch the Minnie Mouse pin and try to poke her fingers through the holes.
We also took some dressing room photos while Mr. R. was trying on new duds. Pippa loves watching herself in the iphone camera. Instant entertainment!

Sushi Anyone?

My friend Danielle is due with a baby boy in May. A group of friends and family members gathered in my hometown to celebrate Baby Boy Williams on Sunday. Unfortunately we currently live 17 hours from my hometown so I wasn't able to attend. (Insert super sad face)
I wanted to make sure his Mama new how much we love them both and how excited we are for his arrival. I searched pinterest and etsy for an unusual, but functional gift for the little Mister.
Enter Baby Sushi
Mr. R. and I love sushi and Miss Pip has been known to swipe a (cooked) sushi roll from our plates now and then. Using this tutorial I created sushi from onesies, hats, socks, baby legs, washcloths, and a fish bath toy.
I love how it turned out!
